What Turo requires from hosts in Australia

Turo's Vehicle Tracking and Technology Policy sets an extra rule for Australian hosts with higher-value cars. If your car meets the threshold and you don't have a compliant tracker, you risk losing part of your protection when you need it most.

Source: Turo Help Centre, Vehicle tracking and technology policy | Hosts. Checked October 2026. Turo can change its policy, so always confirm on its site.

  • Cars with a fair market value of A$75,000 or more must have an activated GPS tracker fitted.
  • The tracker can't connect through the OBD-II port. Plug-in trackers don't count. It needs to be hardwired.
  • Hosts must cooperate with Turo, its partners and police if a car goes missing or isn't returned on time.
Miss the requirement and Turo may withhold up to 20% of covered damages above your earnings plan's damage responsibility.

Why a hardwired tracker suits rental cars

It's wired in out of sight, so guests can't unplug it the way they can an OBD dongle.

Hardwired, not OBD

Meets Turo's Australian rule and stays connected through every trip.

Tamper alerts & backup battery

If power is cut, the backup battery keeps reporting and you get an alert.

4G coverage

Enterprise data SIM on major Australian networks, for city and regional trips.

Geofence alerts

Know when a car leaves the metro area or arrives back for return.

Driving alerts

Flags speeding, harsh braking and possible accidents.

Trip history for disputes

Time-stamped records back you up on late returns, kilometres and claims.

Heads up on AirTags: Turo prohibits AirTags as an active tracking device and can penalise hosts who use them. A proper GPS tracker is the safe choice.

Car worth under A$75,000? A tracker still pays for itself.

Even when Turo doesn't require one, many hosts fit a tracker because one bad trip can cost more than years of monitoring.

  • Late or no returns: see exactly where the car is and share it with Turo or police.
  • Theft recovery: a live location gives you the best chance of getting the car back fast.
  • Guest disputes: trip history settles arguments about distance, location and timing.
  • One app for every car: check your whole fleet at a glance.
